Why is it not practical to treat everyone with respect as individuals? Are you proposing a country where everyone is equal but some are more equal than others?
Gordon Brown-Nose @ 51 weeks and 1 day ago
Surely the word there Ash is "if". I haven't heard anything about that yet so could you enlighten us?
Gordon Brown-Nose @ 51 weeks and 1 day ago
He has a habit of doing that. Funny he never comes back to apologise or correct.

Obviously beneath him.
Gordon Brown-Nose @ 51 weeks and 1 day ago
I am genuinely shocked by this agenda. It is totally divorced from the current economic climate and doesn't even tackle any of the burning marco-economic and political questions. I mean stuff that's really critical to our daily lives and those of the next generation. Like how we build working class and manufacturing jobs in real industries in our country at a time when the BRIC countries are advancing.

If Labour gets destroyed in the right-wing press for spending it's time on this out-of-touch selection of student debating topics then we only have ourselves to blame. Yet again, it's not the Tories who are killing us - we're doing it to ourselves.
Jason Bradley @ 51 weeks and 5 days ago
impotent?

what would you want TT if china, russia, US and once india is on the top table decide that they do not want to deal with the EU countries individually but only collectively and only thru the EU.

what would you want TT?
ash cash @ 51 weeks and 6 days ago
Baroness Warsi had it right on quesiton time (last year?) when she criticised labour engaing with asians and other groups through 'community leaders' instead of treading everyone with respect as individuals.

I don't agree. what you say is not practical. we need across-community leaders - i.e community leaders who can represent all sections of the community - rich poor, black white whatever.

our community leaders at present are not fit for purpose.
ash cash @ 51 weeks and 6 days ago
Most people think the BNP are lowlife - so what better place for them than the EU parliament with all the other lowlife's?

The public electing BNP MEPs says as much the publics contempt for the EU as it does about anything else.

Tell me - what nasty evilness have the BNP MEPs managed to perform so far?

We were told it would be a disaster - but it seems they are as impotent as all MEPs are... Expensive, *very* expensive, but impotent all the same.

I'm reading the list and I'm reading it again, but I really am struggling here Alex. Just one, thats all I'm looking for. I'm going to get some sleep and look at it again with a fresh face, maybe its been too long a day.

Welcome back by the way and hope you had a good time over there. Anthony did a fine job in your absence, a very fine job.
Bill Dewison @ 51 weeks and 6 days ago
I'll give you my 2p worth.

I suspect it is because noone dare admit that there are major issues - it would be taken as undermining/criticising Brown and his government, the presenter and sponsor would be hammered.

Also - if anyone presenting had any idea of how to 'get back' what has been lost, don't you think maybe it wouldn't have been lost in the first place?

If the labour party had any real idea how to engage the british people they would be engaged with them already and not talking/worrying about engaging...

As regards "How should the left engage British Muslims" - what could be more misguided? if you 'philosophy' doesn't allow you to engage everyone in exactly the same way then your phlosophy is broken.

Baroness Warsi had it right on quesiton time (last year?) when she criticised labour engaing with asians and other groups through 'community leaders' instead of treading everyone with respect as individuals.
tory 'killed for telling the uncomfortable truth' troll @ 51 weeks and 6 days ago
There should certainly be one, at least one, called "Winning back the British people" or "Supporting the Working Classes again", etc.

These are all fringe events, but you're right.

I don't understand it either.
Alex Smith @ 51 weeks and 6 days ago
In fact, I'm not overly sure about the conference titled "How should the left engage British Muslims", surely that should be titled how should the Labour Party engage British people or do the overall population not matter to this conference?

Alex, please help me, I'm reading the lists of conferences and talks within the Labour conference and I'm not seeing anything related directly to the people of Britain. I'm seeing a lot of side issues, a lot of minority issues and I'm seeing alot of internal Labour issues, but nothing really discussing the real issues facing today's nation. Don't get me wrong, I can see a lot of retorical questions, but we know what the answers are already. What is needed is some taxing questions where the answer is not already decided.

I'm being serious, I need help to understand this. What am I reading here? The 2009 conference or a series of meetings about random issues that bear no resemblence to what needs discussing?
Bill Dewison @ 51 weeks and 6 days ago
I see Shahid Malik has a voice at the conference. Not entirely sure whether that is appropriate given his role in government recently.

Anyway, how does one get an invite to these shindigs? I'd be happy to attend a number of the speeches and conferences listed, although I imagine I'd end up on News at 10 if I contributed!?

Does anyone know why Polly Toynbee gets a bit part, or for that matter Feargal Sharkey? And is it entirely appropriate to have a conference named "Never mind the bollocks"?
Bill Dewison @ 51 weeks and 6 days ago
And just who is Chris Paul - another one of the "regime" who cannot stand any criticism. This is why the government are suffering so badly - they think only they know what is best for the rest of us and do not trust the electorate.

Carry on Chris if you want Labour to continue on the slippery slope. And for the record I have no idea who Ricki nor what you mean by a "troll". Please explain if you know.
George Woodhouse @ 52 weeks and 2 days ago
There is of course a "Progress" rally which may be the event of which you speak. It was close to one last year ... even after the knifing had been called off there were some clenchy jawed colleagues hissing and grinding teeth and so on. Hilarious to behold actually. And Lorna did such a job of "chairing" it last time that she has been invited back. Extraordinary.
Chris Paul @ 52 weeks and 3 days ago
Speaking of being locked in, I'll be amused if the Tory Party conference ends with a number by Karl Heinz-Pilchards-In-Tomato-Sauce Clayderman.
Charles Hardwidge @ 53 weeks ago
At Manchester last year, I compalained to a police officer about the sheer intensity of the security. He said, "We have to have security, Sir. The Labour Party would never forgive us if Gordon Brown got bumped off right now!"
Dan McCurry @ 53 weeks ago
Well I'm going as a delegate and I'm in two minds about your point, Ricky. I remember the Labour Party on the news everyday of conference when someone would get up shouting for this or that. It was open for free speech but tended to be taken over by people who just wanted to scream abuse. Guess who got on the news in those days?
These days it's really a networking event, although if you do have something to say they will get you up on the podium. Watch out for me.
Dan McCurry @ 53 weeks ago
I have to say Ricki that I would not vote for the BNP whatever they promised because they are a despicable bunch of lowlife. I may go for UKIP though, despite the fact that I am broadly in favour of the European project. But if it is not democratic I would rather do without it altogether.

I did say I wanted a guarantee not a promise - for any political party a mere promise means little these days. Not sure how we would be sure a guarantee was enforced but I am sure there is a way. Perhaps by the potential PM saying that he would resign as PM if the vote was not given to us within 180 days of getting into power. I think I would go for that - it would be very difficult for them to wriggle out of it.
George Woodhouse @ 53 weeks ago
Hi George

Your point on who to vote for is a bit strange as all parties promised it last time , That is why i fear unless we talk to people honestly and without spin we will suffer at the election .

I had a discusion with some friends around the time of the euro elections and to my shock 2 said they would vote for the bnp as they had lost faith with labour , After a debate i managed to convince them to vote for the tories and lib dem and another said he was going to vote ukip .
I said to them however you feel about labour we must never let the real nasty party ( the bnp) to get a hold on power , My freinds have said at the next election they wont vote for labour as they think the need to remember that that they serve us and not the other way around , I am having thoughts myself , I wil countinue to try and defend the labour party but i am finding this very difficult within my own belifs
ricki lake @ 53 weeks ago
Ricki
The Lisbon treaty is certainly part of it - although I am very concerned generally about the minimal level of democracy in the EU. I have said many times that my vote at the next election will go to whoever guarantees us a vote on the Lisbon treaty - and in future to any party that will put improving our democratic processes at the forefront of their manifesto.

I strongly believe that without this no promises made by any party are worth anything at all.
George Woodhouse @ 53 weeks ago
Hi Geogre , If you are meaning the lisbon treaty i to was dissapionted that we was not trusted to vote on it , This to me sums up why we are so low in the polls even if we have good policy no one is listening .

I felt glad when Tony stood down hoping for a change but instead we got more of the same , The same spin and then the mcbride affiar , Latly we had reports of minsters attacking the cheif of the army over expenses ( the irony ).

How can we move forward ? As i said on another post bring in Kate Hoey as leader she will be able to reach out to voters on both sides .
ricki lake @ 53 weeks ago
I like the idea of debating democracy (Sunday 27th at 12.45).

Will this be in the context of the United Nations Human Rights Commission declaration that the conditions for democracy must to include "transparency and accountability of government institutions"; and that we must have the right to choose our governent institutions.

Can someone please explain to me how the EU can possibly comply with these conditions.
George Woodhouse @ 53 weeks ago
Just checked the schedule, couldn't see it, what time is the leadership challenge?

Dunno, but there's a t*** polishing workshop on Wednesday afternoon.

I can only spot two members of the government there (both serial troughers), is conference relevent anymore?
Charlie Farley @ 53 weeks ago
Hi labourlist , If i may ask what is the point of a confrence when those at the top have it all stage managed so there is no dissent and no debate , It turns out to be a propaganda soapbox .

If we want to change our leadership ( i think it will help ) they dont listen , all in all whats the point ?
