Chris Grayling: telly addict

GraylingBy Rupa Huq

You’ll have heard the furore about Chris Grayling likening crime in modern Britain to the Wire, the “gritty” US drama. Not only has this man got no grip on reality (rather like Alan Duncan who seems to think MPs live on rations when the rest of us think £64k a year is good-going) but his remarks are not isolated. They are part of a pattern which suggest the shadow Home Secretary makes up policy while watching television. This kneejerk-ism is not befitting of someone who is aiming to be part of a government running the country. Consider the evidence:

“We have a growing ‘Jeremy Kyle’ generation of young men, alienated and drifting without a purpose in life.”
Chris Grayling, The Guardian, 11 February 2008

“But I think many parts of our society no longer know how to bring up children. We live in a country where in many places Frank Gallagher style parenting has become the norm and not the exception. Frank’s kids might have turned out alright but that was more luck than good judgement – and no thanks to him.”
Chris Grayling, Speech delivered on 14 May 2008

“The Wire used to be just a work of fiction for British viewers. But under this Government, in many parts of British cities, The Wire has become a part of real life in this country too.”
Chris Grayling, The Times, 25 August 2009

The Manchester Evening News’ David Ottewell quotes the real Home secretary Alan Johnson concluding that Grayling just wants to look “cool”. I agree: it’s as embarassing as a trendy vicar trying to get down with the kids. There’s a line in the Morrissey song “Reader meets author” this is remeniscent of that goes:

You don’t know a thing about their lives
They live where you wouldn’t dare to drive

Even Fergie, i.e. Sarah Fergusson, went to the place she was “improving” for the ITV curiosity “The Duchess and the Estate” rather than simply engaging in armchair criticism of it.

Chris Grayling might be good on on one of those TV quiz shows (on the subject of tv) airing at the moment on the BBC and Channel 4 but he really should get out more.

"Frank’s kids might have turned out alright but that was more luck than good judgement – and no thanks to him.”
And he's talking about the guy on Shameless? Grayling is further removed from reality than we thought. Surely it was neither luck nor good judgement, rather scriptwriting.

Apols for being slow at commenting. Had to get new password and been not 100% computer-watching due to have a pile of marking (retakes) beckoning.

Anyway johnsmith: the furore went wider than just the formerly Fleet Street press. There was a big splash on it on the ITV "London Tonight" local news-show the day before yesterday. I think it is a legitmate topic to comment on... would-be trendy vicar clumsily flailing around at church disco in bid to be cool-and-trendy.
Dan; yes agreed there are a few more grey hairs since that pic. Will let you know when next around in photo-taking mode (when marking done for starters).

On the rations/ chickenfeed "joke", not funny, not big, not impressing anyone. I always liked the Evening standard cartoon when Terry Wogan's salary was revealed in the 80s and TW dismissed it as "peanuts". Two tramps are waiting out BBC TV Centre as he comes out and they say to him "spare a peanut guv".
As wuth Grayling it just goes to show... how theother half live.
Rupa Huq @ 53 weeks and 5 days ago
First it was "hug a huddy, then broken Britain", now the latest theme is the Wire and Urban warfare. Grayling fails to mention the excellent work done by the police together with the local community to put dozens of these thugs behind bars for a long, long time. While this Surrey based Tory boy may feel that he is all hip watching episodes of the Wire from his Epsom home, to compare Moss Side with the Baltimore work of fiction is both irresponsible and dated.

Cuz I'm lazy and sending a cheque is easier.

I bet Guy's already ordered a copy so he can find out what I know that he doesn't.

Gonna be a bit late after John Redwood reviews it, or something.
Charles Hardwidge @ 53 weeks and 6 days ago
Hi Charles,

Why don't you review the book for LabourList and donate the book as a prize?
Alex Smith @ 53 weeks and 6 days ago
I'm not saying he should have got rid of Darling, I'm pointing out he wanted to get rid of Darling and had Balls lined up.

But his "decisiveness" caused so many of his cabinet to resign that he "decisively" decided not to do what he had planned all along.

For further examples of Brown's decisive nature shall we reflect on the election he didn't call?
Guy M @ 53 weeks and 6 days ago
Who wouldn't be ashamed of New Labour's broken society?
roger alexander @ 53 weeks and 6 days ago
Keeping Darling was a decisive move. The man is capable and scrupulous, and deserves the credit for following through. There's little point in throwing your chief engineer out the window when they're keeping the show on the road and Darling gives the impression of a man who cares about his work. Most people can respect that and it makes Darling the housewives choice over Osborne who, quite frankly, comes over as a nutter and a chancer.
Charles Hardwidge @ 53 weeks and 6 days ago
Compared to Brown's decisiveness in removing Darling?
Guy M @ 53 weeks and 6 days ago
I look forward to the news coverage of the entire cabinet on a day trip to the National Gallery in order to try to gain some "presence"......

Priceless
Guy M @ 53 weeks and 6 days ago
"The Tories still haven't explained themselves for the last disaster they caused"

Compared to the legacy Labour are about leave it was a golden inheritance
Guy M @ 53 weeks and 6 days ago
What is wrong with Alan Sugar being a minister?,it is a shining example to all working class people who never had very wealthy maters and paters, by getting by off their arses and graft hard they too can be as wealthy as the priveleged few
kamard franklin @ 53 weeks and 6 days ago
Grayling and Purnell. Two peas in a pod. Were they at public school together I have no doubt that Purnell would have offered himself up to be Christopher Grayling's fag! - in every sense of the word!
Tim Robins @ 53 weeks and 6 days ago
The Tories still haven't explained themselves for the last disaster they caused so I'm hardly expecting signs warning of the roadworks ahead.

Nice use of the word ameliorate earlier. It has that rolling the tongue and slightly puckering quality about it like some good wines.
Charles Hardwidge @ 53 weeks and 6 days ago
Erm. I was kind of hoping for some sort of announcement of policy here, TT. I don't think that by broadly announcing that the Conservative Party has the intention of "Not being labour" is going to cut it as a manifesto pledge somehow or other. One day the Tories are going to have to explain what they intend to do when in office and I, for one, am looking forward to it.
Tim Robins @ 53 weeks and 6 days ago
Presence is a mostly understated and indirect thing but Labour also have to be there and ruffle a few feathers. One could recommend books but a George C. Scott movie or almost anything by Picasso would do. It's less brain work as well which is a lesson in itself.
Charles Hardwidge @ 53 weeks and 6 days ago
Cameron's poor judgement and cowardice in not sacking Grayling is an issue. He's beginning to develop that foot in mouth quality and weakness that he accused Brown of. Perhaps, the pressure is getting to him or his obsessions are taking him over? After throwing a few tantrums Cameron's dithering is becoming more obvious.
Charles Hardwidge @ 53 weeks and 6 days ago
"Labour need more presence and popularity. That requires a few punches to the head and slapping Tories down".

How do you propose to become more popular my punching and slapping the Tories down? Their is only one way for Labour to become more popular, and that is a clear out of Brown, Mandelson and Balls. As I have said on another thread, these three a toxic to the public.
Paul 'hit or miss as to whether my comments will make it through' Pinfield @ 53 weeks and 6 days ago
Now be careful what you say about "benefit cheat" Grayling. After all that "great Labour figure" James Pur-nell was greatly influenced by him. What macho-man Jamie took over he was going only to put his stringent Freud measures on to NEW IB claimants but then, one weekend old woman grayling proposed it should apply to ALL exisiting IB claimants and hey-presto Tory Boy Pur-nell changed his policy.

Who can forget the bare-chested macho posturing between the both of them as to who was tougher?

Grayling is Pur-nell manque, both are intellectual lightweights pretending to be great thinkers. Both of them are sadly deluded, just loud-mouthed little pen pushers.
Alan Giles @ 53 weeks and 6 days ago
Ideas and fair play isn't enough. Labour need more presence and popularity. That requires a few punches to the head and slapping Tories down. I just see this past week as a learning curve. Could be better but not bad as far as it goes.

I recommend people read "Getting to Yes." This book steps beyond crude and cliche issues of positioning, the soft sell and hard sell, and gets to meat of negotiation. It's a very insightful book and more directly useful than 'The Plan'.

The Americans can have big mouths and rely on technology too much but they can also be very practical and have a love of learning. Based on research by Harvard University "Getting to Yes" provides a useful stepping stone to achieving and cooperating.

If Labour List do a review of this book I'll offer to pay for a copy they can offer as a prize. Send me an email and I'll mail the cheque. I hate liabilities hanging around so this offer is good for this week only.
Charles Hardwidge @ 53 weeks and 6 days ago
But how will the Conservative Party reverse these trends?

Not being labour is a damn good start. Everything labour do has the exact opposite effect to their declared intention.
tory 'killed for telling the uncomfortable truth' troll @ 53 weeks and 6 days ago
Invest in loss. But, that requires people at the bottom to acquire meaningful power, status, and wealth. What's the Tory proposal? Handing more to quangos, charitable organisations, and business. Wrong. You have to create real jobs, a better impression, and raise incomes. A 10% cut at the top and spending it on the bottom should work but this is antithesis to the Tory nature. They can't do it.
Charles Hardwidge @ 53 weeks and 6 days ago
Just glanced through the Independent, TimesOnline and Telegraph. Can't see the furore.

Rupa, do you think this what will get us re elected? Are we connectd to our electorate?
john smith @ 53 weeks and 6 days ago
Off with his head!
Tim Robins @ 53 weeks and 6 days ago
Being a Tory Grayling has a head start toward insanity!
Tim Robins @ 53 weeks and 6 days ago
But how will the Conservative Party reverse these trends?

I'm curious because under both of George W. Bush's administrations in America the exact same thing happened only more so and in spades!

I invite any Tories out there to enlighten me as to how your Party intends to tackle and ameliorate these knotty problems.
Tim Robins @ 53 weeks and 6 days ago
Why do I need to go into an area to know I don't like it?

There are parts of London with their records of crime and deprivation that I pass through on a train that I know are places I wouldn't go into without the need to spend a few hours walking about watching my back all the time to prove I don't want to go there.

Labour has presided over an increase in the underclass, dysfunctional families and innner city youth violence. Try and hide all this away all you can but omst people know exactly what you've done with 12 years in power.
Guy M @ 53 weeks and 6 days ago
Don't forget the Tories signed up Carol Vorderman after she got canned for a younger, cheaper and better looking model.
Louis Mazzini @ 53 weeks and 6 days ago
That's because the Wire isn't on Sky.
Mark Cannon @ 53 weeks and 6 days ago
Rupa,

That photo must be seriously old now. When are you coming into town next? I'll give you some new snaps.
Dan McCurry @ 53 weeks and 6 days ago
Nice bit of sexism there, Old Bald Bloke #1.
Charlie Farley @ 53 weeks and 6 days ago
Even the Tory supporting Times are slagging this bloke off in their editorial on p2, no less. He's certainly made an impression.
Dan McCurry @ 53 weeks and 6 days ago
You lot have got the fat estate agent girl. At least Alan Sugar has some life experience behind him.
Dan McCurry @ 53 weeks and 6 days ago
That made me chuckle from someone supporting a government that tried to hire Fiona Phillips and has Alan "you're fired" Sugar as a minister.

But he has been found guilty in The Court Of Public Opinion!
Charlie Farley @ 53 weeks and 6 days ago
This really is becoming desperate stuff. There are massive areas of deprivation in this country where drugs are rife, and the crime and violence that go hand in hand with drugs are an everyday occurrence. Perhaps instead of attacking the messenger, you might be better off looking for the reasons that your 12 years in government have failed to resolve these desperate problems?
Paul 'hit or miss as to whether my comments will make it through' Pinfield @ 53 weeks and 6 days ago
Its a tradition that Labour Home Secs (Reid, Blunkett, Shrek, Smith and now Johnson) go mad so Grayling is just starting early.
Charlie Farley @ 53 weeks and 6 days ago
Difficult to spot this right wing humour is ;) (even more so when they spell it 'homour', perhaps a Conservative Future spellcheck tuition session could be arranged).

More yoda impressions as circumstances allow
Louis Mazzini @ 53 weeks and 6 days ago

Oh, a Tory troll!
Mike Homfray @ 53 weeks and 6 days ago
I'm sure he won't remember me but I did hospital radio with Chris Grayling when we were in our teens. I didn't get on with him then and humour was not something I remember him for.
Mike Homfray @ 53 weeks and 6 days ago
Do you have no sense of homour? The ration jokes was akin to Boris mentioning chicken feed. Of course only comrades can make jokes.
